Stunning result for Squadra Donne ladies cycle racing team in the Tour of Malta which finished a few days ago.

Ioan Sewell won the stage race outright having won 2 stages and third in the final stage; Miriam Freemantle was in 4th place after a crash on the final stage denied her a justiffied 2nd place overall – again she was 2nd in the two previous stages – so it could have been a clean sweep of the podium but even so it was a tremendous start to the season for the team. Indeed one of the local newspapers spoke of “Squadra Donne’s total dominance of the stage race”.

Tour of Malta is a very hilly race but an excellent way to prepare for the coming season, spending a structured week in the sunshine with racing each day has to be better than breathing in the cold air of England at that time. The Marina Hotel where all the riders stayed in Sliema was also excellent with good food and friendly staff.

With tremendous backing from Gail Aspden and Michelle Buck the team have benefited from their week in the sunshine. Iona was interviewed on two of the local television stations plus the back page of the sports section of the newspapers each day.
