For the fourth season Bikefood will be fuelling Jon Miles’ Womens Road Racing Team, Squadra Donne. For 2012 there are significant changes ahead which will propel the team forward especially now that Shutt, the makers of British made cycling kit, announced it has stepped up as lead sponsor for the Team.
As a result the team will now be called Shutt – Squadra Donne Ladies Cycle Racing Team. Additionally Sportstest, the UK-based company that brings science to training, has also joined the team as a sponsor.
Not only are the ladies going to be well clothed, fed and very well directed – they will also be riding team bikes for the first time as the carbon frame maker Cello has tied up with the team to provide a fleet of carbon racing frames.
2011 was another successful year for the Squadra Donne Ladies Cycle Racing Team. The annual trip to race the Tour Ta’ Malta saw them achieve a podium place on each stage, earning rider Iona Sewell a 3rd overall placing in this international stage race (Iona won this race in 2010 fuelled by Bikefood). In the Ras na mBan, the team achieved a 2nd overall on stages 2 and 3, while rider Kimberley Ashton took 2nd overall on the Final General Classification. Squadra Donne, through their various incarnations, have always been a serious force to be reckoned with in women’s cycling both at home and on the continent.
Bikefood bottles will continue to be in evidence once again with the team. We are particularly pleased to continue our support for Women’s Cycling as we’ve seen a lot of interest and people coming to add support, which is growing each year. New sponsors are certainly a good sign, as is increased competition with new teams forming, and also dedicated training and development camps being organised to support ladies racing teams.
Peter Bragg, Managing Director of Shutt agrees that the future is bright for womens cycling in the UK, “We have made great strides in the development of our women’s cycle clothing range over the past year. On top of this we have also seen a fantastic return on our investment in the ladies cycle team and as a result we wanted to give back to the team and increase our involvement,” says Pete “As a growing British brand we want to be able to give back to the sport we love and this sponsorship is a way for us to do this.”
With the increased levels of support and interest in womens racing there has never been a better time for ladies to join the sport competitively, and having sponsored 5 times National women’s champion Helen Wyman, two teams in last years Womens Tour Series (Squadra Donne and Inverse RT) alongside supporting Filles a Velo and Cycles Cote d’Azur, we are confident that Bikefood can continue to play an important role supporting a blossoming area within our sport.
